Auditory Attention

There is accumulating evidence for the use of auditory stimuli as noninvasive, non-pharmacologic forms of neuromodulation. Two prominent stimuli are (1) gamma entrainment through 40-Hz sensory stimulation for various neurological disorders and (2) Mozart’s Sonata for Two Pianos in D Major (K448) for epilepsy. Nonetheless, little is known about the mechanisms underlying these beneficial neural responses, especially related to the pathology of epilepsy. Our music studies were undertaken to uncover mechanisms correlated with positive epilepsy responses and to exploit these properties to either identify other anti-epileptic musical stimuli or develop novel musical stimuli as adjunctive interventions for epilepsy.
