THE EPILEPSY AND COGNITION LAB

Where science meets patient needs

About Our Lab

The Epilepsy and Cognition (ECoG) Lab operates within the Epilepsy Center and the Department of Neurology at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth and is led by Dr. Barbara Jobst.

The ECoG lab is one of the only research labs in New England pushing the boundaries of knowledge and discovery in epilepsy research. We collect and focus on electrical data from patient’s brains to not only understand the effects of epilepsy on cognition, but also identify key findings in memory and attention. In addition, we explore various brain neurostimulation techniques to determine its impact on epilepsy and cognition.

Our Research Projects

Perceptual Event Boundaries

This research aims to provide a neurophysiologic measure of real-world forgetting across a doorway, help understand the influence of abnormal epileptiform brain activity and help device stimulation treatments that not only help for epileptic seizures but also for memory impairment in epilepsy.

Restoring Active Memory

The Restoring Active Memory (RAM) program aims to mitigate the effects of traumatic brain injury (TBI) in military Service members by developing neurotechnologies to facilitate memory formation and recall in the injured brain.

Auditory Neurostimulation

This project focuses on how specifically amplitude and frequency modulated sounds, as well as particular genres of music, affect attention using spike detection algorithms and observing increased activity in the brain.
